UC-Architecture Hosts Seminar on Collaborative Approaches to Green Building with Ar. Delano M. Marzo

UC took another step toward advancing sustainability in architectural education through a special seminar titled “Building Greener, Smarter, Together: Exploring Collaborative Approaches to Green Building,” held on March 9, 2024, at U401. The event featured Ar. Delano M. Marzo, a sustainability advocate and expert in green building design, who shared valuable insights on the importance of collaboration in creating environmentally responsible and energy-efficient spaces.

Attended by architecture students and faculty members, the seminar provided a comprehensive discussion on the core principles and practices of sustainable design. Arch. Marzo introduced participants to various green building certification systems such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), BERDE (Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence), and EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies), emphasizing how these frameworks guide architects toward designing with environmental accountability and innovation.

Beyond technical knowledge, the session highlighted the need for collective action among architects, planners, engineers, and communities in building sustainable cities and reducing environmental impact. Ar. Marzo underscored that green building goes beyond design- it is about collaboration, shared responsibility, and commitment to long-term ecological balance.

The seminar forms part of UC’s continuing initiatives to integrate sustainability and climate-responsive design into its architecture program, preparing students to become responsible practitioners in the built environment. Participants left the session inspired and motivated to contribute to a smarter, greener, and more sustainable future through their future design work.

The seminar supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening sustainability awareness and professional learning in architecture. It advances SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through the promotion of innovative green building practices. The event contributes to SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by encouraging eco-conscious urban development and inclusive environmental design. Lastly, it aligns with SDG 13 (Climate Action) by empowering future architects to take active roles in mitigating climate impacts through sustainable construction and planning.
